RENEWING YOUR INSURANCE - Existing Martial Arts Australia policy
This is easier than doing it for the first time because we have already screened instructors to see how they should be rated but it is the insurer's requirement to fill out new application forms along with the MAA Membership form. We will contact you by phone, email and by post around one month before your policy expires to offer you renewal terms. We will repeat this process one week prior and up to one month after expiry if you have not responded. If you haven't respond at this point your insurance will lapse.

What is the industry standard for martial arts insurance?
Industry standards for insurance have been created by a number of peak body associations (Martial Arts Australia included) with consultation with insurance companies to determine risk factors. A standard policy is based upon the risks, the type of exposures, the qualifications of teachers, polices and procedures being used and previous claims history. An industry standard gives a martial arts school owner something to measure so they know if the insurance policy covers their total operation. This is of course is vital for operators not to find out after a claim that something wasn't covered and they end up paying out of their own pocket.

What sort of polices and procedure should an instructor have in place and will this have an impact on their insurance?
One thing is to keep an attendance / incident / injury book so that the school owner has a record if a student hurts themselves or to check if a student was actually training on the date of a claim. Many students train at more than one venue or do other physical activities and may simply make a claim on the martial arts insurance because there wasn't any insurance on the other school/activity they were attending. Unethical yes, but people do it.

What items are covered in a martial arts sports insurance package?
It all depends on what is written in the policy wording and how that is interpreted so it is best to talk to our brokers about it.

How can you be under insured and how will this affect you?
If you take out an insurance package and state you have 100 students when you have 200 you are understating your numbers by 50%. If you had a major claim with two people suing you for $50k each and the insurer found that you understated your students by 50% they could deem you under insured by 50%. In most cases the insurer would opt to only pay 50% of the claim leaving the instructor/insured to pay the $50k short fall themselves. Avoid this potential disaster by submitting the correct number of students/members in your application.
