Core Requirements to Operate a School
- A minimum of black belt (or purple belt) to teach without supervision
- 4–5 years of training and/or coaching experience
- Current Working With Children and Police Checks
- Instructor liability insurance
- Genuine business skills to manage the operational and compliance side of a school, not just the training floor
Pathways to Get There
- In-house instructor or team leader development programs
- Formal qualifications — Certificate III/IV in Sports Coaching or Fitness, or TAE40122 Trainer & Assessor
- Coaching courses through MAA/AMACS or other accredited organisations

Certified Practising Instructor
Free with MAA Membership
Your entry point into recognised, professional status.
- 5+ years of experience
- Adult black belt (or equivalent)
- Junior Instructor & Team Leader certificates also available
Certified Senior Instructor
$50 with Gold Membership
For instructors ready to formalise real seniority.
- 10+ years of martial arts experience
- Minimum 3rd Dan
- Certificate III or higher in a relevant field
- Eligible for up to a 4-Star Rating
Certified Master Instructor
$50 with Gold Membership
The top of the pathway — recognition to match a genuine career’s worth of experience.
- 15+ years of martial arts experience
- Minimum 5th Dan
- Certificate IV or higher, or a TAE qualification
- Eligible for a 5-Star Rating
Why Accreditation Matters
Unlike some industries, martial arts instruction is not governed by formal government qualifications. But instructors still need to meet legal and industry standards, especially around business operations, instructor qualifications, insurance and venue hire, Working With Children Checks, and risk management and safety protocols.
